Profile Information

About Me:
I work in oils but occasionally will pick up pastels to do small paintings Plein Aire. I have been doing primarily large contemporary realistic paintings on commission and shows but recently I have wanted to move to smaller "old world" painting techniques for a change of pace. For more photos of paintings, bio, contact info please go to my blog at www.sondravanhuss.blogspot.com.
About My Art:
My art is always a struggle to improve my technical skills along with my ability to communicate my philosophy about the importance of stopping to take a breath and observe those very taken-for-granted objects in our every day lives. I try to bring the viewer's attention in closer and observe the beauty and sometimes the mystery that these objects bring to our environment.
Studied? Exhibitions?
I have a BFA in Fine Art from UC Irvine, studied at the Los Angeles School of Design, Mt. Diablo College and Golden West College, CA, classes and workshops with some very fine artists over the years, exhibited in galleries, shows and won numerous ribbons and awards.
Favorite Music:
Classical, Country Western, Pop, Irish Folk
Favorite Films:
I love thrillers, drama, good comedy and sci-fi
Favorite Artists:
So many - Loran and Gene Speck, Carol Marine, Robert Wee's early works, Barbara Kacicek's fruit, Hollingsworth's silver, Dutch Masters

Sondra, I see Holden on the map.The farthest north I've been in Maine was Belfast. I'd like to see more of that area some day. Castine, Blue Hill, Deer Isle. One of my wife's favorite writers was E.B White who had a salt water farm in Brooklyn. He wrote some great short stories and articles for the New Yorker, co-authored the revised book on "Elements of Style." My parents
honeymooned in a place called Camp Eggemoggen, no doubt on the
Eggemoggen Reach. This was back around 1937. Love the Farnsworth. Saw a fine show there a few years back,"Capturing Nureyev, James Wyeth Paints the Dancer." "Seven Deadly Sins" is coming to the Brandywine River Museum here in Chester County in the Fall. My favorite in that series called "The Warning," pictures a sea gull flying close to the waves of the sea. The museum shop at the Brandywine has a very large framed and signed giclee of that for almost $1500. If I had the means, I would buy it!I live quite near Chadds Ford in Chester County where the Wyeths live. My wife's great aunt and James Wyeth helped start the museum. The building was an old grist mill sitting on the banks of the Brandywine River. The architect did a beautiful job with this old brick mill in converting it to a museum venue. It houses all three generations of Wyeths, N.C., Andrew and James.By the way, not far from the Farnsworth (if it's still there) is one of the best restaurants in Maine Called "Primo." It sits on the border between Rockland and Owl's Head. I think the constant rain we've had all during this month has finally abated. Have a great day!

Hi Sondra, thanks for the kind comments. The still life paintings are painted in 3 to 4 hours each day, the point behind painting these little studies is to loosen up.

Beautiful work Sondra, wow!
