Why are you an artist?

I am an artist because I find the human condition so totally disgsuting that I have no other choice but to channel all of that disgusting energy into some chaotic medium that speaks about the beaut...

What would you like b-uncut to do for you going forwards?

I realise that this post first started at the end of December but I woke up this morning with a great idea. Is it possible that B-Uncut could host a small yearly event where the artists could meet ...

Why are you an artist?

Gravity. I think at the core most artists paint because it is who they are. I have read some of the discussions on this page and would like to make a note. It doesn't matter whether you sell for 20...

Thank you Chris and Michelle! In fact you are both right. I had thought for about three hours about filling in the backround with either some abstract layers or a wall and some shadows to show the room the figure is in. So that answers the point t...

Yeh I can see what you mean, I thinks it very much a personal preference thing, we all have different things which we visually like in a work of art. I'm not saying it doesn't work as it is though, I think it does and very well (hence why ive rat...

I have to say Chris, that I think the contrast between the busy detail of the figure, and the void of the background, has a good balance. The figure needs room to breathe and exist within the painting, any more constrained and I think it would loo...

I like it, very interesting that you've got the more expressive marks underneath and then painted more neat lines to create the human form. Only thing that I think is wrong with it is that I personelly would of liked to see the figure filling more...

Love the depth. You've captured the intricacy of the human psyche and all that that entails. Lovin it!

Hey interesting group! I would like to put forward a small, intimate, but very well travelled space in Bath called St James Wine Vaults. If any artists up here are looking to show work in the South West the Vaults is free to rent/hire and has an a...

This has a very primitive but also original aspect to it - it is hard when looking at this piece to see where the influence comes from which is really refreshing. Art should, at all points possible take us out of the context of what has been seen ...

Well, from my point of view you made the right decision, but as we all know, personal preferences are many and varied. I think it's a very strong piece and will do very well. :-)

Luke, you should continue in this path,it is becoming more lively ,less intellectual, although you know that it is not a criticism of your former works which I love.

Hi Luke, thanks for the comments on "Gripped By Fear", and i totally agree, that for me also, the disturbed or darker parts of our emotions are much more interesting, to paint and psychologically. Maybe that's why sometimes people label me as "dark" without first getting to know me.

Thanks very much Luke! Loved your works too...they have a very cubist feel to them and a strong simplicity which hits out at me and speaks volumes...very expressive, unlike the cubist works of the masters that were more decorative. Bravo to you too!

Thanks again Luke! I see a lot of the German cream of the cream in your art, and eclectic are we all in the end, but it's good to see how we manage to produce Unikat pieces one way or the other and that’s what’ll slowly determine our style… You’re very skilled (and a good observer :-))

About My Art:
My work is about pushing the Minimalist aesthetic as far as it will go. I use ideas from Minimalism, mixed media, Cubism, Nagualism, and Jazz to express what is going on in the world around me.

Critics and collectors often place me in the category of 'abstract' which is fine up until a certain point. But in reality my work is fluid. I draw on experiences and memories of chaos and idiosynchratic behaviour to define what is around me as images. Like Jazz my work cannot be defined easily other than my work began in 1994 working on sets of collages inspired by Jazz influenced music. I like to explore elements of poetry in my work and set up dialogues between the canvas and mythological figures to express what I hear in music as static images that exist in a timeless space.

In this way I have set up a belief system that images are not bound to time as are humans but create themselves in a sort of 4th dimensional space where the images themselves can choose to either participate in time, or not.

I also like to create modes in my work where by Minimalist motifs not so different than those of Karlheinz Stockhausen are allowed to forge spaces where the human subconcious can explore a new space not readily available in the third dimension. So my work is effectively a study of the human memory as it pertains to the recursive nature of the human brain - to disengage from a subjective reality and engage in a much more tangible view of the subconcious whilst keeping close to a Minimalist way of thinking.

A strong influence on my work are my colleagues Bruno Tocanne, Louis Sclavis from ECM Records and the veteran Canadian artist Michael Snow all of whom have pushed me to push further in my work.

New Bristol Collective

Welcome to the New Bristol Collective.

This collective is for artists, performers, and of course galleries that work in or near to the cities of Bristol, Cheltenham, Bath, Southampton, and Exeter, either fulltime or infrequently.

The collective strives to be a group made up of individuals that share a set of common core beliefs:

1 Art is not dead and does not have to thrive on the idea of death or morbidity.

2 There is more to art in the UK than anti-establishment art that brings with… Continue
