PRESS ANNOUNCEMENT 'THE ARTISTS DIARY

International Artist Community Launches 'The Artists Diary' In 2007 a small group of emerging, contemporary artists led by Philip Letts, Innovation Artist and Abstract Photographer, set out to change the art world and founded b-uncut (www.b-uncut.com). They believed that the power of the Internet and the ensuing social media revolution afforded them the opportunity to redefine the equation between artist and gallerist, producer and middleman. They believed that if they could build a large enough network of talented artists from around the world, then one day, this network would be able to build its own art marketplace. One defined by the artist, one that rewards the creatives and that is more democratic and meritocratic. A marketplace that would be transparent for the art buyer and better value for all. A marketplace that avoided unnecessary middlemen and shady dealers and one that would provide a large and growing body of attractive work from all corners of the contemporary art world. And a Fair Trade for artists.

Today this network is one of the largest and most vibrant communities of quality artists from around the world. And on the 30th June they launch their art marketplace at b-uncut.com. A place where anyone can come and view their art and produce, their online studios and their lively community. In advance of that they have together published a Diary. An Artists Diary. The Diary is an annual collection of the ambitious and talented works of the contemporary artists that make up b-uncut.com. It is an opportunity for them to share their art in the physical world and a mechanism by which to support and promote their community and cause; 'A Fair Trade for Artists'.

'The Artists Diary' is currently only available online and retails at $24.95. It is on sale throughout the world (and in other major currencies) at http://bit.ly/theartistsdiary. Support b-uncut artists and help to 'set them free'. www.b-uncut.com.

I am looking for something that i can practice with and if i like it harden it up. Use them as small down scale models and maybe after ive got better produce a decent peice. i have used clay in school but that was 5yr ago

It depends on the final look that you want to achieve. I have used 4 different types of clay myself. There is water-based, oil based, sculpey, and paper clay. I know that if you want the best in detail, then waterbased clay is probably the foremost way to go. It is very soft, and can really portray those finer details, plus it has 2 advantages for casting. You can either fire it in a kiln, or mold it and produce your piece in other medias...resins, metal, plaster..etc.

I like this discussion. I worked as a lab tech in the ceramics dept. of a college when I was an art student. I had to measure and mix dry materials together to make ceramic glazes and stack the kilns for firing, but never really got into making clay objects myself, but I have an intense appreciation for ceramics and have collected lots (even work by some well known artists) but gave that up and sold off all my collections

I wonder what you want to make? There are many types of clays. We often used that self hardening clay (DAS clay)in the University when I was studying Animation to make clay puppets.
Here is a link for the website;http://www.hobbyceramicraft.co.uk,
they are based here near Reading so its easy for me to reach there, but the guy, Tom Dance, is a very nice and helpful person and am sure he will definitely suggest you someone near you.
Also, I would suggest you to read more about clay, it is such a vast subject to study. Each clay has its own properties and give you different results.
Not only just clays but different firings as well.
If you are not intend to make something big then try Sculpey, you can easily bake it in the oven but it always stay soft. But best one to experiment and it comes in very small pack.

Yes please Surmeet. I went into an art store yesterday and i saw some clay they have for sale. Was maybe thinking of giving it a go. If not then maybe play dough it will be :-D

Depends what you wanna bake, Jason. You can bake that polyform clay by sculpey in kitchen oven but other clays need really high temperature and time as well. So I prefer kiln only. I know it is quite expensive to buy a kiln and then you need a separate place to put it cause it make the surroundings very very hot. There are some studios who that allow you to use their kiln on very reasonable rates. I can give you contact details of a person who deals with kiln and other pottery stuff, if you want.
